The seaside village of Stalida has a population of 1000. It started growing as a popular tourist destination since the late 1960's. That's when the first big hotels were built. It really started to bloom during 1980 and onwards. This is the newest settlement, which was constructed because of tourism.
Being a prime tourist resort, nowadays, it offers hotels, furnished apartments and rooms for all budgets. It also offers a lot of food, coffee and partying options, due to the large number of restaurants, tavernas, cafes and youth spots that attract a lot of tourists during the summer months.
Even though there are banks in Malia and Hersonissos you can only find ATMs in Stalida.
There is regular transportation from Stalida to Heraklion, Hersonissos and Gouves (west) or to Malia ad Agios Nikolaos (east), so it's easy to visit many cities and villages along Crete's northern coast. The transportation is possible by regular public buses, taxis and rented or privately owned cars or motorbikes.
You can swim and do water sports in the sandy beaches or go snorkeling in small rocky bays.
